Economic Development is the creation of wealth from which community benefits are realized.  It is an investment in growing your economy and enhancing the prosperity and quality of life for all residents.  Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is “breaking new ground” in response to the economic climate of the nation.
National economic trends, such as unstable unemployment, the threat to Social Security as we know it, and the widening gap between wealth and poverty are the basis for the development of Financial Fortitude, the current Economic Development program initiative of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.  Financial Fortitude is a process that will help program participants to set and define goals, develop a plan to achieve them, and put the plan into action.  The process serves as a blueprint to address all aspects of personal finances.
Beyond Financial Fortitude, Western Wake Alumnae also provides a range of valuable programs, including home buying and small business seminars.

As an organization of college-educated women, Delta Sigma Theta plays an active role in the educational movement, seeking to inspire, motivate, and support the aspirations and achievement of youth and young adults.

The Western Wake Alumnae Chapter implements Delta Academy and GEMS, two national initiatives, that are programs geared toward inspiring and enriching the lives of African-American and Latina young ladies in grades 6-12.  Aimed at shaping well-rounded  young women, the goals of the Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy is to enhance and spark interest in STEM and careers where minority women are scarcely represented.  The Delta GEMS program offers a road map for college and career planning through activities that provide opportunities for self-reflection and individual growth.

The Western Wake Alumnae Chapter also recognizes the impact academic excellence can have on our growth as a community.  Since our chartering, we have raised and distributed over $50,000 in scholarship funds.

The Health Awareness committee has a general focus of promoting awareness of community health issues and preventative actions such as staying active.  The committee frequently hosts events such as the Step & Stroll which keeps Sorors active while having fun and learning new dance moves.  The Western Wake Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. participates annually in a community Health Fair which includes a mobile dental unit, activities such as Zumba and Self-Defense taught by members of the local police department, and various vendors to encourage and support a healthy and active lifestyle.

Previous Activities

The International Awareness and Involvement Committee is dedicated to developing community programs designed to provide assistance, relief and resources to developing countries; as well as fostering local advocacy for social injustices and helping those in need.  The Western Wake Alumnae Chapter partnered with the 16th Episcopal District of the AME Church in its Sewing Machine Project.

The project’s goal is to empower the women with some level of independence through the use of sewing machines. The project is to provide sewing machines to women in Haiti with a twofold purpose:

  1. To help them develop a trade that they can supply clothing for their families.
  2. To empower them with a skill that they can use to make money for the family.

The International and Awareness Committee takes part in many other initiatives such as the Cleaning supply drive for Alliance for AIDS and the Freedom for Girls Campaign.

Operation Red Drop

With the current state of our government and policies, the Social Action calendar has been full as the committee has been working overtime to serve as a vehicle for advocacy while effecting social change and public policy.  During the previous election period, the committee held a candidates forum for all candidates to introduce themselves and speak about their platforms.  The committee continued their efforts by hosting voter education/mobilization panels, voter registration drives, and various other events to keep voters informed about one-stop voting, absentee ballots, and election day voting.

The committee also spent a great amount of time this year with the Delta Days initiative. There was a Delta Days at the School Board. Sorors attended Delta Days at the Nations Capital, where they contributed to increase legislative members’ involvement in the national public policy-making process.

The Western Wake Alumnae Chapter previously hosted Delta Day at the NC General Assembly. Topics discussed included sensible gun reform, human trafficking, and redistricting. Overall the event was a success with with hundreds of Deltas advocating for the communities that we serve across North Carolina. There is “Power in our Voices: Deltas We are the Change”.
