Upholding Tradition

Lewis Carroll’s Jabberwock from “Alice in Wonderland” provided the spark for a lasting Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. tradition. In 1925, Soror Marion Conover’s scholarship fundraiser, featuring diverse performances, laid the groundwork for the modern Jabberwock. This event, now a cornerstone of Delta tradition, has been replicated by chapters worldwide since its official adoption and copyright in 1947.

The Western Wake Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.’s Jabberwock Scholarship Program and Pageant empowers high school young ladies by providing financial support for their college education. Participants engage in a comprehensive curriculum encompassing personal development, cultural enrichment, and community service. Through fundraising initiatives and participation in the Jabberwock Pageant, they compete for scholarships, with the top fundraisers awarded the titles of “Miss Jabberwock,” “1st Runner Up,” and “2nd Runner Up.” All participants meeting program requirements receive 80% of their fundraising efforts as a scholarship towards their chosen four-year university.
